The Downblock

Beyond the teaching of a full sprawl, it is important for wrestlers to learn the downblock.

The red wrestler starts his shot; the blue wrestler begins to redirect his opponent with his head-tie.

The blue wrestler wants to redirect his opponent's shot down and away from his leg.

Here, the blue wrestler enacts a straight leg kick back and up to clear his leg.

Notice how the blue wrestler turns with just his right foot as point of contact.

The downblock has opened the corner of his opponent's stance for an attack.

This is a scramble situation, where the blue wrestler has to hustle for the go-behind.

Get low and rund down the opponent.

Downblocks should be an important part of a wrestler's daily stance and motion drills.

These can be drilled with an opponent or on your own.
