Jake Deitchler named Wrestler of the Week for June 10-16

Jake Deitchler (Ramsey, Minn./Minnesota Storm) has been named Wrestler of the Week for June 10-16.

Each week, will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.

The 18-year-old Deitchler became the biggest story of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials after winning the Greco-Roman title at 66 kg/145.5 lbs.

The University of Minnesota recruit stunned two-time World bronze medalist Harry Lester in the semifinals before downing Faruk Sahin in the finals on Saturday night in Las Vegas.

Deitchler now advances to the Olympic Games, set for Aug. 12-21 in Beijing, China. He is coached by past Olympic silver medalist Brandon Paulson.

Deitchler became the first wrestler from high school to make a U.S. Olympic team in wrestling since Mike Farina of Illinois qualified for the 1976 U.S. Olympic Team in Greco-Roman. The first high school athlete to make a U.S. Olympic team was Jimmy Carr of Pennsylvania, a member of the 1972 U.S. Olympic Team.
