Jahwon Akui named Wrestler of the Week for March 30-April 5

Jahwon Akui (Bellwood, Ill./Team Illinois) has been named Wrestler of the Week for March 30-April 5.

Each week, will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.

Akui won the 171-pound Juniors title at the USA Wrestling Folkstyle Nationals this past weekend at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Akui of Illinois stopped Devin Peterson of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., 3-1 in the finals. Tied 1-1 late in the third period, Akui hit a lateral drop takedown on the edge of the mat with five seconds left for victory.

Akui was a 2008 Cadet Nationals champion in both freestyle and Greco-Roman. He also won FILA Cadet Nationals in both styles in 2009. Peterson was a 2009 Cadet Triple Crown winner.

Akui won an Illinois state high school title this past season for St. Rita High School after placing third in 2009.

Akui, a junior in high school, is ranked No. 6 nationally at 171 by Amateur Wrestling News.

Akui is a top prospect in football who rushed for over 1,929 yards and 31 touchdowns as a junior.
